Information Technology is one of the most accessible career fields for people with criminal records. Here is why: CompTIA and other IT certifications have zero background checks -- they test only your knowledge and skills. Many IT employers, especially in help desk and support roles, focus on your certifications and ability to solve problems rather than your background. The tech industry generally has a more progressive attitude toward hiring people with records.

Remote work opportunities are abundant in IT, which means you can work for companies that may never meet you in person. Freelancing and contract work are also common, giving you the option to work for yourself. The IT field values demonstrated skills over credentials -- if you can fix the problem, that is what matters. IT also offers one of the clearest upward mobility paths: you can go from help desk to system administrator to network engineer to cybersecurity analyst, each step roughly doubling your salary.

CompTIA certifications are stackable, meaning each one builds on the previous. The recommended path is: CompTIA A+ is the starting point for all IT careers. It covers hardware, software, networking basics, security basics, troubleshooting, and operational procedures. A+ is the most widely requested certification for help desk and IT support positions. It requires passing two exams (Core 1 and Core 2). CompTIA Network+ is the next step, focusing on networking infrastructure, protocols, troubleshooting, and security. Network+ is valued for network technician and junior system administrator roles.

CompTIA Security+ is the gateway certification for cybersecurity careers and is approved by the U.S. Department of Defense for government IT positions. Security+ is one of the most valuable certifications in IT, often required for cybersecurity analyst and information security roles. Beyond these three, CompTIA offers advanced certifications including CySA+ (cybersecurity analyst), PenTest+ (penetration testing), Cloud+, Linux+, and others. Each additional certification increases your earning potential.

IT careers offer strong earning potential that increases significantly with experience and certifications. Help Desk / IT Support Specialist (CompTIA A+): entry level $38,000-$50,000, experienced $45,000-$60,000. Network Technician / Administrator (Network+): $55,000-$85,000, with senior network engineers earning $90,000-$120,000. Cybersecurity Analyst (Security+): $75,000-$110,000, with senior security professionals earning $110,000-$150,000+.

System Administrator: $60,000-$90,000. Cloud Administrator: $70,000-$110,000. These salaries increase significantly with additional certifications (AWS, Azure, Cisco) and experience. The BLS projects 15% growth for computer support specialists through 2033, much faster than average. Cybersecurity positions are growing even faster, with CyberSeek reporting hundreds of thousands of unfilled cybersecurity positions nationwide. The demand for IT workers consistently exceeds supply, which benefits job seekers, including those with criminal records.

A structured study plan makes a huge difference. Start by downloading the free exam objectives from CompTIA's website -- this is your study roadmap. Supplement with hands-on practice. For A+, practice building and troubleshooting computers, install different operating systems, and use command-line tools. For Network+, set up a small home network and practice with subnetting. For Security+, use free tools like Wireshark and practice identifying security concepts. Take practice tests regularly -- they are the best indicator of your readiness. When you consistently score 85% or higher on practice exams, you are ready for the real test. The passing score for most CompTIA exams is around 720 out of 900 (roughly 80%).

CompTIA exams are expensive at full price ($358 each), but there are several ways to reduce costs. CompTIA Academic Store offers discounts (about $236/exam) if you are enrolled in any educational program, including community colleges, online courses, or even some free programs. CompTIA CertMaster bundles sometimes include exam vouchers at a discount.

Workforce development programs through your American Job Center may provide free exam vouchers. Non-profit training programs like Per Scholas, NPower, and Year Up include free exam vouchers. Some community colleges include exam vouchers in their IT program tuition. Veterans can use GI Bill benefits to cover exam costs. If you fail an exam, CompTIA offers retake vouchers at reduced prices. You can also look for promotional pricing -- CompTIA occasionally runs sales. Ask about exam voucher availability at any training program before enrolling.
